Real Story Lab

What is the Real Story Lab?
The Real Story Lab is a space for you to explore the history of recorded sound and to share and record your own oral history about Michigan. Our Story Booth, located in the Real Story Lab, is a professional recording booth used to record interviews and conversations that will be preserved in the Archives of Michigan.
What is Oral History?
Oral history is another lens for understanding history. It’s a method of sharing important stories that are based on memories or experiences of significant changes in a person’s life.
What happens during a Story Booth appointment?
If you would like to share your story with us and have it preserved in the Archives of Michigan, please fill out an Appointment Request Form. Themes for the interviews will rotate throughout the year and conversation prompts will be provided to get you started. All recording sessions will be facilitated by Archives of Michigan or Michigan History Center staff. Recording sessions may take up to 45 minutes. 2 people may participate in each interview.
How will my story be shared?
Stories recorded in the Real Story Lab will be shared with the public at www.michiganology.com on a webpage dedicated to Michigan oral history. Selected stories may also be highlighted on the michiganology.org homepage or featured on the Michigan History Center’s weekly Stateside history segment with Cynthia Canty on WUOM Michigan Radio (91.7 and 104.1 FM and michiganradio.org). Your story will also be preserved in the Archives of Michigan.
