I have a collection of over a 100 Civil War Letters from my great great grandfather to my great great grandmother from 1864 -1865. They lived in Berriing Springs, he was stationed in Little Rock, Ark. He died there in 1865. I also have a picture of him and his foot-locker. All was found in the attic of the family farm in Almena, Michigan.
For monetary appraisals of Civil War collections, you would have to talk to rare book or manuscript dealers. I do not have any names of such dealers to recommend, but a Google search would hopefully turn up something.
