Mitten: Soo Locks
The Soo Locks were a huge challenge to build, but they dramatically altered shipping, and were important to the nation’s industrial growth. Partly due to the discovery of copper and iron in the Upper Peninsula, the federal government agreed to help fund the building of the locks.
