SUMMARY: Presentation: Flags of the Confederacy
DESCRIPTION:John Keller\, a Michigan native now residing in South Carolina\, will explain and show some of the flags used by the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Mr. Keller notes that the general public are often unaware that there were several OFFICIAL flags of the government of the Confederacy and a myriad of battle flags of the various military units that fought for southern independence in the War of the Rebellion (Yankee term) or the Second American Revolution (Confederate term). In March of 1861\, Southerners who supported a flag similar to that of the United States adopted "Stars and Bars" as the official National flag of the Confederacy. The flag's first official use was at the inauguration of Jefferson Davis on March 4\, 1861. This flag resembled the United States flag\, but replaced the "stripes" with 3 "bars". The flag had 7 stars\, one for each state that was part of the confederacy at the time. This flag was dubbed the "Stars and Bars". More stars were added as other states joined the confederacy. The National flag of the confederacy is almost forgotten today\, and the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia has become the symbol most associated with the confederacy. This flag has a blue X on a red field with 13 stars\, for the thirteen states in the Confederacy. The program is free and open to the public.
